Summary:
Spraying bituminous surfacing onto roads was adopted in Victoria in the 1930s. It changed the way roads were made and it became easier to transport people and goods, improving the quality of life for many Victorians. The audio recordings below feature stories from the men who worked on the roads over the last sixty years. These oral histories document the changes in how roads are made but also provide a sense of what life was like 'on the road'.
