In January 1863 John McDouall Stuart and nine companions rode into Adelaide in tatters after having crossed the unexplored vastness of the Australian continent from south to north and back again. Flags flew, bands played, thousands cheered; he was crowned with a wreath of laurel. Just over three years later, fewer than a dozen mourners followed him to his grave.
