A skilful politician, Walter Jona was a member of the Victorian Parliament for 21 years. He was responsible for the introduction of the mandatory wearing of seatbelts in Victoria in 1971 – a world first which has saved thousands of lives. Walter also made a major contribution to the cultural diversity of Victoria as Australia’s first minister for ethnic affairs. As minister of community welfare services from 1979 to 1982, he reformed an antiquated and inhumane prison system.
