INTRODUCTION:

Some historical events are like earthquakes, jolting the normal course of events dramatically into new directions. Most changes however, take place so slowly, we are often unaware of the magnitude of the changes until much later, when we can look back down the long tunnels of history. This book allows the reader to put history into fast-forward, and freeze frame at random, giving the subtle shifts of history a starker quality. We can see the arrival of the seekers of fresh pastures, driven out by drought form the fledgling settlements around Sydney; view the incredible diversity of people brought in by the tides of immigration which ebbed and flowed across the ancient landscape during the gold rush; follow the great move to the land as the glitter of gold faded; watch the development of exports to Europe, which saved the small selector, and review the passing parade of events – the coming of age within the family of Empire, the wars, the depressions, and the good times, through to the present day. The Bicentenary is an appropriate time for us to look over those years and try to capture the essence of our development. For the north east of Victoria, there can be no more enjoyable method than watching its history rolling by through the pages of this book. ‘There was a time’ is no ordinary shire history (inside front cover).
