Notes:
Shepparton – arguably the most vigorous and forward-thinking provincial centre in Victoria – thrives on water, it always has. This book traces the development of Shepparton from its humble genesis as a crossing place on the Goulburn River, to the thriving hub of a wealthy irrigation district as it is today. Ron Michael casts the historian’s critical eye over Shepparton’s first 150 years, and what emerges is more than just another history book: he challenges local government approaches to planning and other issues, questions aspects of Shepparton’s development and alerts us to some critical issues facing the city and its rural environs in the future. Rather than merely record names, dates and facts, he succeeds in accessing the impact of important influences on Shepparton. They include closer settlement and irrigation, migration and multiculturalism, export industry growth and entrepreneurship. The author takes these disparate elements that have shaped this vibrant and eclectic rural city, and welds them together in an astute, 150-year perspective. (from inside front cover).
