Previous ed.: 1989. Jim 'Splinter' Walshe was among the first Australians to enlist when war broke out in 1939. He was drafted into the mortar platoon of the 2/30th Battalion and was among the first Australian troops to oppose the sudden Japanese thrust into southern Malaya. He was taken prisoner and spent three and a half years in Changi and in Japan as a prisoner of war.
