Bibliography: p. 97. Details the contributions to the “Working Harbour” by two government organisations – the Sydney Harbour Trust and the Maritime Services Board. The Sydney Harbour Trust was formed by an Act of Parliament as long ago as 1900, and the MSB by legislation as early as 1935. The author details the developments instituted by these early organisations and also draws from his and others’ collections of photographs of the many wonderful working vessels the organisations operated.

Pride of place in the book amongst the small businesses that plied their trades upon the Harbour is given to the venerable Stannard family. William Stannard made his mark as a Waterman in 1854, rowing passengers across the Harbour. Little could he have anticipated that the company bearing his name would still be operating in 2004 (although owned by Adsteam).
