In 1948 the Australian journalist and travel writer Colin Simpson went on an extraordinary excursion into Arnhem Land to record many of the people and places around the Oenpelli Region. Simpson went there to report on an expedition jointly sponsored by the Australian government, the National Geographic Society and the Smithsonian Institution in the USA. It broke remarkable ground, bringing back scenes and sounds never experienced outside the region in his sound recordings and films.
