My pilgimage from Melbourne to Menindie, a century after Burke and his party passed that way, to recapture fleetingly the wonder of that progress, proved rewarding even beyond my expectations. In particular, it is my hope that this brief study might itself be something of an acknowledgement of the unique contribution to our colonial tradition of that "mild and biddable fellow", Ludwig Becker. (B. J. Blanchen). Errata and addenda at front of book. Because of the familiarity of the Burke and Wills story to every Australian, the following outline (which draws heavily on the journals of Dr. Ludwig Becker the official diarist and naturalist of the expedition at its outset) hopes merely to pinpoint the track of the explorers camp by camp from Melbourne to Menindie, to enable the interested tourist to follow them a century later in latter day comfort. From Melbourne to the Gulf of Carpentaria, the route taken by Burke and Wills covers 1,800 miles.
