"Part 1"--Cover. Frank McKillop was editor of the Mount Alexander Mail from 1898 to 1921. In 1908 he undertook the task of collecting and publishing the recollections of the many early residents of Castlemaine who had taken part in civic affairs and the development of the township of early Castlemaine. Published daily from 19 October to 23 November 1908, in Part One re-published in 1997, titled Early Castlemaine. A Glance at the Stirring Fifties, McKillop recalled the first days of the Forest Creek diggings and, after thirty-one entries, concluded where the town began to settle into domesticity and the establishment of the first representative electorate.
