Brighton on the sea coast of Victoria has grown like the Tasmanian Blue Gum that stands at the Corner of Dendy and Church Streets. It was a haven for city businessmen who displayed their wealth through the houses they built. The best known figure was Thomas Bent who suffered financial ruin from bad decisions but became Premier of Victoria from 1904 to 1909. Brighton is rich in history but progress is eroding the fine old buildings which are described and illustrated throughout the book.
