CSMC was formed at a time when having a child outside of marriage carried enormous stigma and many women in this position were compelled to relinquish their child for adoption. In 1969 a group of mothers who wanted to forge a different path came together, forming the (then) Council for the Single Mother and her Child. CSMC has since driven many significant changes including: the introduction of income support for single mothers; reform of the legal status of children born outside of marriage; changes to the family law system; and changing stereotypes; all while providing compassionate support to single mothers. This history records and celebreates the remarkable achievements of CSMC and the dynamic women who dared to dream and create a better future for all single mothers and their children. |
