Prahran has a lively, bustling history, from a small settlement set in the bushland of the 1850s to its present status as an inner-city municipality. It has long been one of Melbourne’s most socially and economically diverse areas. In the 1920s the high ground in Prahran was occupied by the mansions of the very rich and the low areas were covered by the narrow streets and cottages of the poor. Over the succeeding years migration, redevelopment, and changing attitudes to the inner city brought about dramatic changes in the kind of people who lived in Prahran. Some of the very narrowest streets and the smallest cottages have now become fashionable places to live. In this book, residents of Prahran, past and present, tell something of their own stories. These are as diverse as Prahran itself. There are tales of wine and roses at balls in Toorak, of playing cricket in the streets of Windsor, and of campaigning against high-rise flats. Here are revealed the changes in Prahran’s streets, houses and factories; how its residents made a living; what sort of schools they attended; how they met and married; what they did for fun; and the changing patterns of shopping in Chapel Street and in Prahran Market. In this book Sally Wilde documents all the elements of the eclectic mix that is Prahran during this century.
