Notes: |
George Bass, naval surgeon, explorer and adventurer, was one of the most interesting men to set foot in Australia in the early days of its colonization. He was first to explore part of the coast of the present State of Vioctoria. He was the discoverer of Twofold Bay, Bass Strait, Wilson's Promontory and Western Port Bay. With Flinders he demonstrated that Van Diemen's Land was an island and his report on the parts of the coast that he explored was directly responsible for the sites chosen when that island was first colonized. He was the first medical man associated with Victorian history, and he was also one of the first naturalists to begin a scientific study of our unique Australian flora and fauna.
