The new John Glew pottery works in Weston Street was owned by Stephen England. This picture shows horse-drawn carts about to be loaded with pipes, behind which are two large downdraft kilns. The domed brick roofs of the kilns can be seen poking through the encircling timber buildings which were drying areas for green pipes, about 1899 p2.

The handwritten note mentions 8.8.8. which stood for eight hours labour, eight hours recreation, eight hours rest. This motto was championed at every opportunity by the union movement as great changes were occurring in the working man’s life during this period p9a.

Frank Manallack is seated in the centre of these repatriated soldiers at the Brunswick Technical School, about 1920. The pottery objects on display cover a wide range of both commercial and artistic wares. Some of these are lidded vegetable dishes, jugs, spittoons, teapots, pipkins and various vases p10.
Plaster mould used for press moulding vine leaf plates for the Repatriation trainees at Brunswick Technical School, used between 1918 and 1923. This mould may well have been in use right up to 1930 by the diploma course students. It must also be noted that Francis Manallack had brought this plate from Cornwell’s Pottery where it had been in production from at least 1900 p11a.

Aerial photo looking north-east from the corner of Pearson Street and Dawson Street. The paddocks at this intersection originally held horses and pit ponies with stables. The next saw-toothed roofed building was the special Brick Department followed by the brickworks complete with three Hoffman kilns. Behind these was Benson’s Pottery where six bottle kilns can be seen. Next along Dawson Street is the Bristol and Sanitary Ware Department with eight bottle kilns. Past this point was the pipe, tile and terra cotta departments, about 1915 p47b.

Repatriated soldiers from World War One were taught new skills to allow them to re-enter the workforce despite their disabilities. Francis Manallack is the central figure here. He oversaw most aspects of pottery production undertaken at the Brunswick Technical School between 1918 and 1923 p102b.
