Notes:
Covers Beechworth's involvement in the Boer War and both World Wars. This is a subject that has not been addressed in any other publication, and yet the town is the birthplace of many brave and fascinating men and women, including two Admirals and a host of decorated service personnel. In addition, the World War 'Honour Rolls' in the town are significantly incomplete and there has previously been no record of local Boer War enlistees. The book provides complete records of all local enlistees, numbering in excess of 1500 men and women, as well as the details of the 120 men and women who died on active service, how they died, which campaigns they were involved in, where they are buried and/or currently commemorated. The aim of the book will also be to describe what occurred in Beechworth during the war years, the farewells to servicemen and women, the attitude of the different religious denominations in the town, the celebrations and memorial services that took place, and the divisive conscription debate.
