This is a study of the exploration of the major rivers in New South Wales, west of the Great Divide; the pastoral expansion of sheep and cattle into Aboriginal lands; the rise of markets; the difficulties of overland transport for wool and rations etc., for pastoral settlements; and the advantages taken by steamer river traffic to solve the problems of these isolated communities, and open up new pastoral country.
