Includes index. Child emigration has a history much older than the First World War. Its beginnings were in seventeeth century slavery, when British convicts were sold to plantations in the Americas. During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, child convicts were sent to Africa, Australia or America, and in the nineteenth century "free" boys and girls were recruited as farm labourers or domestic servants for South Africa or Australia.
