William Fraser Sutherland was born in the Melbourne suburb of Kew in 1895, the fourth child in a family of eight. He was educated at Kew State School, Scotch College and the Melbourne University.

He began his ministry in Manangatang. He accepted a call to Warragul in 1936, and nine years later, then with four sons and a daughter, moved to Noorat in the Western District; and thence to Yarrawonga, Chelsea and finally Mia Mia, from where he retired in 1971.
