Barrabool Shire has a rich and varied history. It was one of the first areas penetrated by Batman’s exploring party and was quickly occupied by squatters from Van Diemen’s Land. The rich lands of the Barrabool Hills were soon sold and became famous for their agricultural products. The shire remained rural in the nineteenth century but towards its end the seaside areas of Torquay, Anglesea and Aireys Inlet began to develop as resort towns. This account not only narrates in detail these events, it also tells the story of the people involved. In its pages you will read of the development of agriculture, of the rise and fall of vine growing, of the establishment of local government, of the history of its settlements (including those that have disappeared), and of the impact of the twentieth century.
