Notes: |
This is a study of a neglected class and a neglected period in Australian history: the gentlemen colonists of Port Phillip and the society they created in Melbourne before the gold rushes.
From 1836 to 1842 the gentlemen attempted both to re-create their home life, customs and milieu in the Antipodes, and to establish a society based on blood, privilege and the principle of exclusion. In this they were defeated.
