INTRODUCTION: FOREWORD TO 1979 REPRINT
Once the Upper Murray District was naught but an untamed wilderness, inhabited only by Australian aborigines in their tribal state, exclusively a hunting and food gathering people noted for their sporadic wandering. People with no permanent camp, obtaining sustenance where nature provided, they did not adopt any form of animal husbandry or agriculture. So, it was left to the early pioneers to ‘open up’ what today is regarded as being one of the richest and most scenic areas in north-eastern Victoria and southern New South Wales, the area that is also the ‘Gateway to the Snowy Mountains,’ mountains that may never have been accessible for settlement had it not been for the courage and fortitude of those early settlers. Men, women too, their wives so often by their side, who gave to Australia the knowledge that far beneath the western precipice of Mount Kosciusko’s peak are the headwaters of Australia’s greatest river, the Murray, the river that Sir Thomas Mitchell, Surveyor-General of New South Wales, following John Oxley’s death in 1828, recorded the Aborigine (native) name as being ‘Millawa’. It is this river that provides the rich river flats that brought prosperity to the hardy pioneers, the river that gives to succeeding generations their own opportunity to prosper. Progress enables the present generation to live in very different conditions to that of their forebears. The name ‘Millawa’ for the Murray may have vanished, and today it is the Upper Murray District, yet many of the unique native names – Corryong, Towong, Kiewa, Gundowring, Tawonga, Dederang, to name a few – remain in the Upper Murray District, proving the pioneers knew the beauty of the Aboriginal language. The Australian Alps, granite outcrops, gnarled snow-gums, a picture that is distinctively Australian – the great Kosciusko, the white magnificence of the Main Range – all this is visible from many parts of the Upper Murray District. These lofty mountains seem to epitomise the spirit and daring of the district’s pioneers, who proved that here lay thousands of hectares of land fit not only for pasturing cattle and grazing sheep, but also agriculture and the growth of pine plantations supplying many timber needs. Undoubtably, they did not visualise that today the largest water power development in Victoria, the Kiewa Hydro-Electric Scheme, would be situated south of Tawonga. The late Dr Arthur Andrews resided in Albury from 1876 until 1919. This great man not only served the town and district as Government Medical Officer for forty-three years, gave of his time so freely to many organisations in Albury, he too became an authority of the history of Albury. Not content with all this, knowing that so many achievements not recorded slip away in time and are lost for posterity, he had the initiative to find the great amount of time needed for research and writing the story of the Upper Murray pioneers in [this book]. Dr Andrews retired to Neutral Bay, Sydney and died there on the 14 October 1925. He was survived by his wife, Caroline Mary Andrews, son Arthur John Andrews of Walla Walla and three daughters: Lina and Dorothy Andrews and Muriel North. The Library of Australia History at North Sydney is to be greatly commended that they have produced a facsimile reprint of Dr Andrews’ valuable contribution to the recording of Australian history.
