Three Italian antifascists thought of seeking asylum in Australia from Fascist terrorism during the first half of last century. Two arrived in 1924, one just before and the other some months after Fascist thugs abducted and assassinated Giacomo Matteotti, the most prominent Socialist leader of the Opposition. The third arrived in 1940, to survive anti-Semitic legislation, a few weeks before the last of the Savoyard kings co-signed the declaration of war on France and Great Britain which set the world on fire. |
