"John Noone was one of the earliest photographers in Melbourne and in the period 1869-1871 he photographed some wonderful panoramas of Melbourne and made up a portfolio which was called views of Melbourne. The photography was superb and we have recorded in detail the tremendous progress made in the first forty years of the city's life. By carefully perusing the photographs we can establish the location of the early engineers, the foundries, cabinet makers, funeral parlors, hotels, food processing companies, gasworks, railways and public buildings etc. The photographs of the west end of Melbourne were taken from the tower of Dr T.N Fitzgerald's residence in Lonsdale Street West, on the northern side between William Street and Queen Street. All of the Noone panoramas have been printed as duotones, using two plates in order to achieve the required depth of colour whilst retaining the fine detail of the original old photographs."
