Notes:
Mai, a child from the Stolen Generation, was taken away at the age of ten from the loving care of her Uncle and Aunt, who lived in Pine Creek in the Northern Territory of Australia. She was institutionalised at the Retta Dixon Home near Darwin until she planned her own further education by secretly enrolling in a Secretarial School. This is Mai Katona's story about her life - a truly remarkable one. She describes it as a journey from the bush to the city. In 1964 she met and married George Katona, while working in the Snowy Mountain Scheme and they moved to Canberra where she was recruited to work in the newly established Department of Aboriginal Affairs. She moved with her family to Tasmania where she continued to work for Department of Aboriginal Affairs. After obtaining her first University Degree she started working for the Tasmanian Government. In Tasmania she helped establish a Women's Community Centre, develop Indigenous Radio and began travelling internationally to assist women setting up their own Credit Unions. During this time she found out that her birth mother was still alive. Continuing her education she then obtained her Master's Degree and travelled to South Africa as Australia's representative to oversee the elections that saw Nelson Mandela become President. She taught at Batchelor College in the Northern Territory and became a Board member of Parks Australia having an input into the Kakadu National Park activities. Her story includes comments by former colleagues and friends. Australian laws, which governed most of Mai's life, have also been included in this story in italics. Hers is one impressive life!
