Charles Fitzroy Walker (1899-1971) was headmaster of Box Hill Grammar in 1926, and from 1929 until the end of 1963. Located in what was then an outer eastern suburb and controlled by the Methodist church, Box Hill Grammar could well be dismissed as a small and struggling school, "important only in the memories of those who knew it and noteworthy because of its head's long reign and its survival before the era of state aid. This thesis argues that Walker and his school deserve greater recognition. The influence of progressive education, unusual circumstances and Walker's pragmatism produced a style of education which differed from the north. Box Hill Grammar and its head were unconventional." --Introduction.
