Notes:
Tracing the life of James Kelly, one of the most adventurous of the Hobart whaling masters. Born in Parramatta in 1791 to an unmarried convict Irishwoman, he took to the sea lik so many native-born australians of the early convict era. He was the first man to sail around Van Diemen's Land in a small boat. His name is remembered by Kelly's Steps in Hobart, Kelly Basin at Macquarie Harbour, Kelly Island off Forestier Peninsula and Kelly Point on Bruny Island.
