Notes:
This is the story traced over eight centuries of a family from a small corner of Scotland almost astride the Highland line. Gaelic in origin they kept close to the old town from which they took their name, and split into groups in Stirlingshire and the southern tip of Perthshire while forming a closely-knit ‘clan’. In the tides of history they were caught up and soon attached to the Stewarts, from the beginning right up to the end. Ruined by the ’15 and ’45, they turned to Jamaica to rebuild their fortunes as merchants and planters and their younger sons scattered far afield. They have been active in the Middle East, Central Aftrica, in Southern Ireland, Canada and Australia.
