From its conception as a line on a survey map to today’s multicultural streetscape, Sydney Road remains constant but ever-changing. It is a road where the rhythms of daily life are played out and where old animosities and new quarrels are staged. Yet it is also where notions of community and harmony are nurtured. ‘Almost pretty’ explores the road’s history, from the Wurundjeri-willam to the present day, from commerce and sectarianism to war and radical politics. More than anything, it tells the intriguing story of Brunswick and Coburg, the two suburbs it traverses.
