'JXSH MVIR: Forever I Live' is a fully-illustrated art book, documenting the career and ongoing artistic legacy of Josh Muir (1991 - 2022), a Gunditjmara, Yorta Yorta and Barkindji artist, who was born and raised on Wadawurrung Country in Ballarat, Victoria. Accompanying the exhibition 'JXSH MVIR: Forever I Live' presented by Koorie Heritage Trust in 2024, this publication presents images of over 90 unique works of art and essays offering deep insight into Josh as a both person and artist. Drawing on works from public and private collections, the exhibition and book highlight the strength of Josh's artistic practice and the important contribution he has made to First Peoples art and culture in South East Australia and contemporary art more broadly. During his career that spanned just over a decade, Josh Muir produced a vast range of paintings and digital artworks that were characterised by a unique vernacular of contemporary iconography, developed by the artist over the course of his career. He embraced digital methods of production and a visual language influenced by street art, a pop aesthetic and various forms of design. His works simultaneously maintain the continuous tradition of storytelling that is inseparable from his cultural identity as a Gunditjmara, Yorta Yorta and Barkindji man. His artworks draw on a range of themes including cultural identity, the impacts and legacies of colonisation, extending to more personal experiences of mental health, addiction, loss and grief. Throughout his career, Josh Muir frequently commented on the important role art played in an ongoing process of healing for him. His works are characterised by a vibrant use of colour and geometric patterning across a range of media, including painting, digital prints on aluminium, neon, animated video works and augmented reality experiences. Edited by Travis Curtin, Gail Harradine and Tom Mosby with texts by Justine Berg, Dominic Cansdale, Travis Curtin, Monique Grbec, Tom Mosby and Shanaya SheridanHardcover139 pagesPublished in association with the exhibition 'JXSH MVIR: Forever I Live' at Koorie Heritage Trust 9 March - 14 July 2024.
